River Eden (12 miles) 

The River Eden offers fishing for wild brown trout amid superb Cumbrian scenery. Fishing in the vicinty of Kirkby Stephen is controlled by Kirkby Stephen and District Angling Association. Day tickets for visitors are available from Hall’s newsagents, Market Square, Kirkby Stephen (Tel 017683 71374). Fishing in the vicinity of Appleby is controlled by Appleby Angling Association.

River Belah (13 miles) 

The River Belah is a tributary of the River Eden offering fishing for wild brown trout. Fishing is controlled by Kirkby Stephen and District Angling Association.

Farleton View Fishery (19 miles)
Farletonview Fishery provides excellent fishing for stocked trout in spring fed water. It is located near junction 36 of the M6 Motorway south of Orton. It has full disabled access. Facilities include a tearoom, touring caravan site and plant nursery.

Lake District (20+ miles)

The Lake District offers great fishing amidst wonderful scenery and is an easy drive from Orton. Wild brown trout abound in the many lakes, tarns, rivers and streams and many waters can be fished free as long as you have an Environment Agency Licence.

From Orton it is easy to get to Ullswater which offers free fishing for wild brown trout and perch in their respective seasons. Windermere is also free to fish for brown trout (not very prolific), pike and perch. Esthwaite is a stoked water offering boat and bank fishing for trout, pike, perch and roach. There are several golf courses near Orton and many more available to those prepared to drive through beautiful scenery for a game. All are open to visitors. Below is a selection of courses available together with the approximate distances from Orton.

Ravenstonedale (8 miles) 

Riverside Golf Club is a picturesque course in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It enjoys an idyllic setting, nestling under the Howgill fells in the village of Ravenstonedale. Riverside is a unique 18 hole, 9 green, small course specialising in par-3 short holes with character 70-140 yard fairways. Visitors can play the course for a modest fee, collected via an honesty box at the first hole. It is not necessary for players to be a member of any other club. It has been said that it is worth the fee just to walk the course. The course takes the driving out of golf.

Appleby (10 miles) 

Appleby Golf Club is set on Brackenber Moor in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside against a backdrop of stunning panoramic views of the North Pennines and the Lakeland fells.

Sedbergh (12 miles) 

Sedbergh Golf Club is set in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside and with the howgill fells forming a magnificent backdrop, the course has been described by many as one of the most scenic and tranquil in the north of England. Buggy, trolley and club hire are all available and visitors are assured a warm welcome.

Penrith (18 miles) 

Penrith Golf Club lies high above the lovely town of Penrith. This moorland course offers a worthy challenge to any visiting golfer. A clear day will have the added advantage of providing some of the finest views of the mountains of the Northern Lake District.
